Sportsmind Coaching Excellence
Correspondence Course

A ten module course incorporating the Sportsmind Mental Mastery program and an introduction to Sports-NLP coaching techniques, into a home study format. The course involves a time commitment of 12 - 18 months; each module requiring 30 to 35 hours of reading and practical assignment activities.

There is no pre-requisite for enrolment, though obviously an interest in sport and a desire to pursue a professional career in sport coaching or athlete management is an advantage.

Each module covers an aspect of mental training for sport, and emphasises practical techniques rather than theory - allowing students to apply the knowledge to their own sports situations. All study materials are included : a comprehensive Sportsmind Coaching Excellence training manual, textbooks and readings, CDs, and exercise and assignment worksheets.

Assessment is by short exercises and assignments in which students demonstrate competency before progressing to the next module Students are graded as competent (C), or not yet competent (N), on each module with a ‘no failure’ policy – students simply continue working at a specific module until the required standard is attained.

Regular contact with the teacher is encouraged and access for questions or feedback is provided by telephone, email and/or in written form.

Sportsmind Accredited Performance Coaches

To ensure that the performance coaches listed below meet the stringent standards of sports experience, education and professional expertise required to work with those aspiring to elite sports performance, the Sportsmind Institute provides the most sophisticated and demanding training programs AND continuing professional development in mental and emotional skills training for coaches currently available.

You can trust all of the coaches listed below, because they have undergone an intensive training program of Sportsmind tuition under the pesonal supervision of Jeffrey Hodges, founder and director of the Sportsmind Institute, and each Australian coach is required to update and maintain their Sportsmind skills by attending the annual Sportsmind Coaching Excellence professional development program for coaches. [Note : Sportsmind coaches outside Australia have likewise undertaken a thorough Sportsmind training under the supervision of Jeffrey Hodges, and their continuing professional development is encouraged through the development of Sportsmind Network meetings and study groups in each country]

There are five levels of Sportsmind coach accreditation, and while the accreditation level does reflect the amount of Sportsmind training an individual coach has undertaken, recognise that many accredited coaches also have other university degrees, qualifications and sports experience that add to their capabilities as a coach.

To find a personal coach either browse through the list below and contact the Sportsmind Performance Coach nearest you, directly, for confidential one-on-one performance coaching. Alternately, contact the Director of the Sportsmind Institute, Jeffrey Hodges, who can help you make the right decision as to which coach would be best for your needs.

Level 1 coaches have a licence for private sports performance consulting, but less experience than level 2 graduates. Level 1 status is attained by attending an 8 day Coaching Excellence course, and one homestudy module. It is primarily designed for sports coaches to introduce them to basic NLP and Sportsmind concepts to improve their coaching and communication skills.

Level 2 coaches have a licence for private sports performance consulting, and all have at least NLP Practitioner status, some have Master Practitioner status, and other qualifications and experience relevant to sports performance coaching. Level 2 status is attained by completing twelve months of study through the Sportsmind Coaching Excellence Correspondence Course. This is the primary training program for coach accreditation with the Sportsmind Institute, and it is designed for those who wish to work one-on-one with athletes and coaches to enhance performance.

Level 3 Coaches have a licence for private sports performance consulting which includes hypnosis qualifications and are Master Practitioners of NLP. Level 3 status is attained by holding Sportsmind level 2 status continuously for a minimum of 2 years; PLUS Sports Hypnosis and Ericksonian Hypnosis qualification; PLUS a teaching (min Certificate IV level) or public speaking qualification or equivalent experience. In addition, organisation, promotion and joint supervised teaching of TWO Mental Mastery workshops is required. Level 3 certification is for those coaches who wish to be involved in teaching licensed Sportsmind Mental Mastery workshops in addition to working one-on-one with athletes and coaches.

Level 4 coaches have held Sportsmind level 3 status continuously for a minimum of 5 years; PLUS a degree in sports coaching or education OR coaching experience at state or national level for a minimum of 3 years; PLUS have made a significant contribution to the Sportsmind network or Sportsmind literature. In addition, organisation, promotion and joint supervised teaching of TWO Coaching Excellence workshops is required. Level 4 status is granted only by unanimous consensus of all current level 3, 4 and 5 coaches, after the above requirements are satisfied. Level 4 certification is for those coaches who wish to be more intimately involved in Sportsmind, accrediting level 1 and 2 coaches, as well as teaching licensed Mental Mastery workshops and working one-on-one with athletes and coaches.

Level 5 Coach accreditation is attained by holding SM level 4 status continuously for a minimum of 10 years; PLUS a significant contribution made to the Sportsmind network or Sportsmind literature over this period. Level 5 status is granted only by unanimous consensus of all current level 4 and 5 coaches, after the above requirements are satisfied. Level 5 coaches' role is one of continuing research, and as experienced mentors for other coaches.

In addition to accredited coaches, some coaches listed below are still completing their studies with Sportsmind, and others are Sportsmind Associates, who are individuals or organisations recommended as offering excellent ancilliary services for sportspeople. Associates may also have undertaken Sportsmind training at Mental Mastery certificate level, and will have considerable training, expertise and experience in their chosen field.

The Sportsmind network of coaches will continue to grow and prosper through the self interest of individual coaches building their own business, and through maintaining a collegiate network to assist with the general promotion of Sportsmind to the sports community, and to provide a vehicle for maintaining professional standards and research.
